Saturday, March 30 from 8:30 – 9:30 pm marks another year of observing Earth Hour. As in years past, the University will be turning off the lights on two of its iconic buildings – the Golden Dome atop the Main Building and the Word of Life Mural on the Hesburgh Library. We again join some of the world’s most iconic landmarks such as the Empire State Building (New York), Sydney Opera House (Sydney), Buckingham Palace and Edinburgh Castle (London), and the Eiffel Tower (Paris).
Earth Hour is a worldwide movement organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature, giving a strong voice to individuals who want to put the world on a path of recovery. The world’s biggest switch off event began in 2007 as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia. Since then, it has grown to engage more than 7,000 cities and towns across 188 countries, raising awareness for energy consumption and its effects on the environment. Last year, close to 18,000 landmarks in 188 countries switched off their lights in solidarity for the most ambitious Earth Hour to date.
You too can be a part of the movement by turning off the lights in your home, host a candlelight dinner party with your friends, go stargazing or take a moonlit stroll, work on improving your low light photography skills, or simply enjoy the peace and quiet that can be found when we power down ourselves and our energy.
