Game Day Recycling

The 80th annual Blue-Gold Football Game on Saturday, April 18th, piloted some key changes to the Game Day Recycling program in an effort to improve upon last season’s success of 73 tons of avoided landfill waste.

The Office of Sustainability – in a partnership with Athletics, General Services, and Security – coordinated the introduction of permanent blue recycling containers to the Joyce Parking Lot. These blue 55 gallon drums were marked with a white recycling emblem and replaced the trash containers normally set out for this game.

New blue recycling bag self-dispensing units made their first appearance this Saturday as well. These units are made from refurbished newspaper dispensers and were attached to the numbered light posts in the Joyce Lot. Tailgaters were able to take as many recycling bags as they needed from these self-dispensers and can then leave the full bags behind at their vehicles to be picked up during the game.

Student volunteers walked the tailgate lot on Saturday morning before kickoff to answer any questions about the changes to Game Day Recycling. Please send any feedback to the Office of Sustainability at sustainability@nd.edu.
