2020 Sustainability Seminar Series: Think Global, Act Local

The Office of Sustainability will again host the spring 2020 Sustainability Seminar Series.  Think Global, Act Local, will highlight areas of sustainability both at home and abroad.  This year features presentations from Therese Dorau, Director of Sustainability for the City of South Bend, Dr. Laura Dassow Walls, professor of English literature and currently the William P. and Hazel B. White Professor of English at the University of Notre Dame, and members of the Office of Sustainability staff.  The series is co-hosted by the Kellogg Institute for International Studies.

All sessions will take place on Fridays from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.  The events are free and open to students, faculty, staff, and the public.  Beverages and light desserts will be provided, and we encourage you to bring your lunch and reusable beverage container.

 Scheduled seminars are:

February 28, 12:00 - 1:00 p.m.:  “Climate Action in South Bend,” with Therese Dorau.  Dorau is the Director of Sustainability for the City of South Bend, Indiana, where she is responsible for climate and energy programs.  Prior to joining the City, she managed consulting projects related to energy efficiency, renewable energy, and environmentally-friendly practices for corporate, federal, and local government clients. Therese has a B.S. in Chemistry from Xavier University and an M.S. in Sustainable Systems from the University of Michigan’s School of Natural Resources and Environment.

 March 20, 12:00 - 1:00 p.m.:  “Earthrise: How Earth Became a Planet and Why It Matters," featuring Dr. Laura Dassow Walls.  Walls is a professor of English literature and currently the William P. and Hazel B. White Professor of English at the University of Notre Dame.  Walls works in the field of literature and science with a focus on nineteenth-century literature and the history of ecological thought. Professor Dassow Walls has received numerous awards, including the Ralph Waldo Emerson Society Distinguished Achievement Award (2012), two National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowships, a Guggenheim Fellowship (2010-11), and the Russell Research Award for the Humanities and Social Sciences (University of South Carolina, 2010).

 April 17, 2019, 12”00 - 1:00 p.m.:  “State of ND Sustainability,” featuring members of the Office of Sustainability staff.  Carol Mullaney is the senior director of sustainability and logistics.  In this role, Mullaney oversees the strategic and managerial direction for the office, focusing on partnerships with campus groups and individuals to advance the university's Comprehensive Sustainability Strategy. Allison Mihalich, senior program director, Caitlin Jacobs, and Greg Koehler, associate program managers, and Donnetta McClellan, project and communications coordinator will give updates respective to their areas of involvement on campus.
