Faculty and graduate students are invited to a reading group to discuss Horizon (2019) by Barry Lopez.

Barry Lopez was a 1966 graduate of Notre Dame and a uniquely powerful and highly influential writer. He was the author of Arctic Dreams, for which he received the National Book Award; Of Wolves and Men, a National Book Award finalist, and many novels. He was a recipient of the Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the John Hay Medal, Guggenheim, Lannan, and National Science Foundation fellowships, and Pushcart Prizes in fiction and nonfiction, among many other awards.

Laura Walls, William P. and Hazel B. White Professor of English, will introduce the discussion. She is currently writing a biography of Lopez. If you plan to attend, please let us know via this RSVP link.

It's a long book, so you are encouraged to prioritize the Prologue, Introduction, and Chapters Skraeling Island, Jackal Camp, and Graves Nunataks to Port Famine Road. If you have time for more, please read the chapters in between.
