Sustainable Choices

Paper Made from Paper

Every ton of virgin paper that is replaced with recycled paper saves 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, 3 cubic yards of landfill space, 4,000 kilowatts of energy, 7,000 gallons of water, and 60 pounds of air pollutants. Office Depot Green Top Paper contains a minimum of 30% recycled paper content.

Efficient Computers

EPEAT is a system that rates computers (desktops, notebooks, and monitors) based on their environmental attributes. Computers can achieve bronze, silver, or gold rating, based on their performance in such areas as reduction or elimination of heavy metals and other toxic chemicals, use of recycled and recyclable materials, Energy Star certification, design that simplifies repair, and product take-back service. Lenovo and Apple both offer EPEAT-registered computers.

Efficient Appliances

Energy Star appliances are certified by the EPA and the U.S. Department of Energy for their energy efficiency. Efficient appliances save money and produce fewer greenhouse gases. Look for the Energy Star when purchasing these and other appliances:

Refrigerators

Energy Star qualified refrigerator models use at least 20% less energy than required by current federal standards and 40% less energy than the conventional models sold in 2001.

Water Coolers

A standard hot & cold bottled water cooler can use more energy than a large refrigerator. An Energy Star qualified model requires about half as much energy as a standard unit.

Photocopiers

Energy Star copiers use about half of the electricity of standard models. Efficient designs help Energy Star equipment run cooler and last longer, saving on air conditioning and maintenance.

Printers and Scanners

Energy Star printers and scanners use at least 25% less electricity than standard models and they print double-sided to save paper.
