Memorial Day weekend, a wonderful American tradition in which we celebrate service members and remember those who have fallen protecting our freedom, traditionally takes its form through barbeques, family time, and of course gratitude for those who have served.

For this holiday weekend we’ve put together a list of activities for the family that will help you integrate sustainability and nature into your weekend:

-Go for a family bike ride on one of the routes identified by the Bike Michiana Coalition

-Hit up the Spring Garden Festival at the Fernwood Botanical Garden and Nature Preserve to pick up plants for your garden, buy hand-crafted artwork for the garden, hear lectures from leading industry experts, and do hands-on gardening workshops.

-Grab some local produce for your Memorial Day barbeque at the Saturday Farmer’s Market from 7am to 3pm

-Take the South Shore Line instead of driving to Chicago for the Memorial Day Parade

-Work out your legs by climbing the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore

-Spend time outside at the beach in New Buffalo or St. Joe

-See the entries from the Earth Day Sustainability Children’s Artwork Competition at the Kroc Center in downtown South Bend

-Help decorate The Urban Garden’s 1968 Mustang for the Memorial Day Parade
