With the 4th of July upon us, it seems that summer is now in full swing.  Here are four tips to help make your summer celebration with family and friends an environmentally friendly one.  You can begin planning your sustainable summer event using one of many electronic invitation sources.  Most are free, easy to use, and are always sustainable.

Go for a walk or hop on a bike

Exhaust from cars contributes to the city’s heat island effect and can make it feel even hotter.  Lower your carbon footprint by biking or walking to the summer celebration.  It will reduce your carbon emissions and provide some exercise and sunshine at the same time.  Too far to walk or bike ride?  Carpooling it is a great sustainable alternative for transportation.

Replace your plastic

Consider using reusable, washable table service for your family and guests whenever possible.  Having more guests than you have plates?  Consider buying environmentally friendly disposable serve ware products made from renewable, biodegradable, or recycled material.  If possible, buy in bulk to avoid unnecessary packaging.

Offer to bring the veggies

We definitely love our BBQ’s but eating veggies is actually better for the environment.  Buying local and organic produce is a great way to support your local economy and reduces your carbon footprint.  So show some love to your salads and veggies this summer or trade that beef burger in for a veggie one.

Show your red, white, and blue

Make sure to have clearly marked reusable bins for your recycling, trash, and organic waste.  Knowing what to put where will keep your guests from guessing and clean-up will be a breeze.
