In its second year at the St. Joseph County 4H Fairgrounds, the 2016 Old2Gold sale saw continued success. The sale this year brought in 1,755 shoppers, made over $33,489 for participating local organizations, and diverted over 119 tons of waste from the landfill.

Donated by students during move out, the items were collected by Notre Dame’s Recycling Department and transported to the fairground where they were sorted by over 20 local organizations. These organizations spent two weeks preparing and staging the materials for sale.

Items were spread out between 4 buildings/pavilions at the fairgrounds. Homewares, sports equipment, and school supplies were housed in one building, all furniture and appliances in another, clothing and shoes in the last, and bikes in an outdoor pavilion.

This year 736 bikes, 243 futons and 91 refrigerators were sold.

Of the $33,489 made at the sale, $8,780 came from the $5 entrance fee and the remaining $24,709 was the result of purchased items. All proceeds from the sale were distributed amongst the 21 community volunteer organizations that assisted in coordinating and conducting the event.

In all, over 60 tons of materials were donated by students and offered to the public. At the end of the sale, only a few items remained. These items were then donated to Goodwill.

“I’m happy to report that the 2016 Old2Gold continued the event’s tradition of success and giving back to the community.” Said Ian Hogan, Manager of Recycling, Waste and Special Projects. “Many thanks to the students who donated items, the community organizations that helped organize and staff the sale, and the customers who attended!”
