Do you have budding artists in your house? The Office of Sustainability wants to show off their talents!
The Children’s Sustainability Art Contest is for children of the Notre Dame community and will be held during the month of April to raise awareness among university families of the importance of sustainable living and to help celebrate Earth Day on April 22.
All young family members of Notre Dame faculty, staff, and students are invited to submit original works of art that focus on the theme of sustainability and this year’s Earth Day theme of ‘Planting it for the planet.’
Winners will come from three age groups – grades Pre-K-2; 3-5; and 6-8 – and will receive prizes from the South Bend Cubs, the Potawatomi Zoo, and the South Bend Department of Parks and Recreation. Winners’ artwork will also be displayed at the Kroc Center in downtown South Bend from May to July.
The entry form, rules, and a contest kit are posted here. Entries must be received by 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 20. All submitted artwork must be original and 100% produced by the child. Artwork can be a painting, drawing, collage, or other two-dimensional work not exceeding 11x17 inches.
Suggested themes include:
- “Planting it for the planet”
- Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, and/or Recycle
- Conserving natural resources
- Energy conservation
- Green transportation including walking, biking, and transit
- Sustainable food
- Biodiversity
Judging of winners will be done by the public on the Office of Sustainability’s website, green.nd.edu. Only one vote is allowed per person per day per category. Voting begins as soon at the artwork is uploaded to the Office of Sustainability’s website. For the best chance of winning, please submit early.
Voting will end on April 21 at midnight and winners will be announced on Earth Day (April 22).
If selected, the submitter will be contacted to provide the hard copy of the artwork for display at the Kroc Center from May 15 through July 1.
The Children's Artwork Contest Packet contains an outline for a family discussion on sustainability that includes suggestions for topics, how to set sustainability goals as a family, and online resources for children to explore sustainability further.
