On Thursday August 23rd at 9:30pm, North Quad will host an outdoor screening of The Lorax, the action-packed and visually spectacular new version of Dr. Seuss’ classic tale.

Popcorn from the South Bend Farmers Market will be served at the screening, which is co-sponsored by the Student Union Board, Student Activities Office, the Office of Sustainability, and VisitSouthBend.com.

“Co-sponsoring a showing of The Lorax with the Office of Sustainability is a great way to kick off the year,” said Caroline Schuitema, Special Events Coordinator for SUB. “We’re looking forward to encouraging environmentally friendly action on campus and entertaining students during the first week of classes.”

The animated adventure follows the journey of a boy, Ted, as he searches beyond the walls of “Thneed-Ville”, a plastic-coated, walled city, for a real-life Truffula Tree. To find it he must discover the story of the Lorax who “speaks for the trees” from an unsuspected teacher. The mysterious Once-ler recounts the story of the Lorax and his not-so-distant relationship to this grumpy yet charming creature who fights to protect the natural world. The movie features the voice talents of Danny DeVito, Ed Helms, Zac Efron, Taylor Swift, Rob Riggle, Jenny Slate, and Betty White.

The event is open to the public, and faculty and staff as well as community members are encouraged to bring their kids and a blanket or towel to sit on. This movie’s moral of hope and environmental preservation are sure to resonate with people of all ages.
