New Staff Orientation

Welcome to the University of Notre Dame

The Office of Sustainability team welcomes you to the University. This page will provide you with some basic information about the sustainability initiatives on campus and how you can get involved. If you have any questions, please contact the office at

Notre Dame recognizes its responsibility to conserve the natural environment while promoting long-term economic and social justice for all members of society and works to foster a pervasive focus on the connection between environmental stewardship and the Common Good. Whether you feel a responsibility to recycle, you just enjoy nature, or want to learn how to use less energy, there is an opportunity to help.

The Comprehensive Sustainability Strategy outlines the University's goals.  This is an evolving document that is overseen by the Office of Sustainability and faculty and staff throughout campus currently serving on Small Working Groups that focus on Energy & Emissions, Water, Building & Construction, Waste, Procurement & Food Sourcing, and Education, Research & Community Outreach.

This is a thumbnail sketch of our efforts and progress in 2019:

Help Spread the Word - Become a Green Ambassador

Please consider becoming one of over 150 Green Ambassadors across campus. You can help Notre Dame reach its sustainability goals by becoming a liaison between your office or work unit and the Office of Sustainability. The only requirement is that you're willing to share ideas and collaborate with others on ways we can each make a difference toward the conservation of resources.

Help Reduce Carbon Emissions

Review the thermostat set point policy to help reduce carbon emissions and energy use.

Did you know? There are more than 50 preferred parking spaces available in various parking lots across campus designed for Low-Emitting Vehicles.  To find out if your vehicle qualifies, email a copy of your vehicle registration and your Notre Dame ID to
