Earth Week: Daily Campus Clean-Up Challenges

(part of a series)

Location: Main Campus

Earth Week 2023

Every day of Earth Week, the Office of Sustainability is challenging the campus community to commit to removing litter from either the campus grounds or around the South Bend area. With a new challenge each day, students are eligible to win up to five prizes! Prizes include gift cards for on- and off-campus locations. Don't tell your friends to participate! If you need trash bags, feel free to stop by the Sustainability Office (100 Campus Distribution Center), and we will gladly provide you with bags.

Earth Week Clean-Up Challenges:

Monday, April 17: Snow Bristle Pick-Up

Find the blue sidewalk snow-cleaning bristles. These long bristles can fall off of snow brush equipment. The person with the most bristles wins! See the bottom of this page for an example of what the bristles look like.

Tuesday, April 18: Lakes Clean-Up

If you can't participate in our group lake clean up at St. Joseph's Lake from 2:30 pm- 4:30 pm, you can still get out to one of the lakes today and pick up trash. A winner will be drawn at random.

Wednesday, April 19: Weirdest Find

What strange piece of trash have you found on campus? A bowling ball? A television? A grill? Search the campus for trash (you'll find some) and show us the weirdest item you found! The Sustainability Team will vote on the most unique find.

Thursday, April 20: Campus-Wide Pick-Up

Campus trash is ever-accumulating outside of appropriate receptacles. Wherever you are on campus, you can easily fill up a bag. A winner will be drawn at random. You can receive an extra chance to win if you include a before and after pick-up image! Click here to see inspiring examples of before and after trash pick-ups.

Friday, April 21: Group Clean-Up

Are you a part of a student group or dorm that wants to help keep our campus beautiful? This challenge is for you! Gather the team for a group clean-up effort. To be entered to win, you need to have your entire group photographed with the collected trash. A random winner will be selected, and the winning group will receive $100 that goes directly to their group or dorm's internal funding! Note: the student group must be SAO-recognized.

Saturday, April 22: Blue & Gold Pick-Up (Earth Day)

Earth Day coincides with the Blue & Gold game this year! With an influx of campus visitors, trash may accumulate as well. Collect as much post-game trash as you can to be entered to win a prize. And remember: the majority of trash will likely be bottles and cans. Be sure to find a blue toter near you to recycle these items and keep them out of the landfill.
