An Irish TD, Danny Healy-Rae, made international headlines in 2016 when he declared during a discussion of climate change: “God above is in charge of the weather. . . we here cannot do anything about it.”
In stark contrast, the sociologist and environmental historian Professor Jason Moore (Binghamton University) has also made headlines—by reframing our current era as the age of the Capitalocene, rather than the Anthropocene. He argues that capitalism should be seen as a “world-ecology” of wealth, power, and nature.
With this as her starting point, Dr. Nessa Cronin will bring the Irish experience to bear on the current climate-change debate. She will focus on the need and implications for a new dialogue, a new vocabulary, and new ways of being in this “age of the 6th extinction.”
Dr. Cronin is a Lecturer in Irish Studies and Associate Director of the Moore Institute for Research in the Humanities and Social Studies at the National University of Ireland, Galway. Educated at Trinity College Dublin (B.A.), Warwick University (M.A), and the National University of Ireland, Galway (Ph.D), she has published widely on various aspects of Irish writing, cultural geography and community mapping practices.
