Moreau Seminary recently joined the Green Seminary Initiative, an organization that promotes efforts by theological schools and seminaries to incorporate care for God’s creation into the identity and mission of the institution.

“If we really consider it, a commitment to sustainability is the natural response to God’s love shown in creation. These blessings are many and like any treasure we want to protect and properly use them,” said David Halm, a seminarian who is directing Moreau’s sustainability efforts. "The GSI and Notre Dame’s Office of Sustainability are tremendous partners in helping us learn and promote this stewardship.

“GSI is dedicated to building a nationwide coalition of theological schools that engage faculty, staff, and students in infusing care of the earth into all aspects of theological education,” said Beth Norcross, Interim Director of the Green Seminary Initiative. “Specifically, the initiative encourages the education of seminarians and the ‘greening’ of seminaries in five broad areas: Education, Worship, Buildings and Grounds, Community Life, and Public Ministry.”

Over 40 seminaries around the country have joined the Green Seminary Initiative thus far. GSI is housed at Drew Theological School, which also provides institutional support, and is guided by a diverse set of scholars and seminarians dedicated to faith-based earth care.
